Daemons

they’re there, waiting
for me at the door
and in every room,
shadows creeping
along the walls
and tapping
on the windows
waiting
waiting
tentacles outstretched
to receive me
needles pushing
their way under my skin
seeping poison into my brain

if I fall asleep
they will take my soul

so I can’t go home
and be lulled to sleep
some say I invited them in
no one should do
what I did
but all the same
they’re there
waiting
waiting
to steal my breath
with one sweet kiss
so I keep on driving
I’ve been everywhere
at least once

if I stop
I will fall asleep

if I fall asleep
they will take my soul

One Response to “Daemons”

  1. Written in the mid 1990s. I experienced what I called my ‘year of confusion’ around that time where I wrote a lot of ‘where is my life going?’ and ‘what do I want out of life?’ type of poetry. Not a year I’d like to relive!
