Song to a Distant Love
Feel the soft touch
Of the Lycra,
Your hand reaching
Across the miles
To touch me,
Fingers entwining,
Testing, pulling
You closer.
Feel the soft touch
Of the Lycra,
My heart beating
Out a song
Of my love for you,
Electrons dancing
Down the wires
To sing
To you.
Feel the soft touch
Of the Lycra,
It seems
That you are here,
A presence beside me,
Holding me,
Virtual breath
Against my skin.
Feel the soft touch
Of the Lycra,
Second skin
Hiding the secret
Of technology,
A secret bringing
Us together
Again and
Again.

This will always be one of my most favorite poems. Written in the early 1990s specifically for my boyfriend at the time (who is now my husband). We were in a long-distance relationship and I was thinking how badly I wish that virtual reality suits were common so we could melt away the miles, reach out and feel like we were together.
