Divided Bed
The vastness looms
Before me,
Behind…
Above…
In the distance lie
Two rounded mountains,
Side by side,
Cracks and crevasses
Cutting them deeply -
How can I cross the void?
Part lies in the shadow
Of the night,
Of me…
Of you…
But the distance
Lies between us,
Carved mountains,
Side by side,
Not touching -
How can I cross the void?

Back in the 1980s, in my college years, I liked to sit and stare at abstract paintings at a small museum on campus. There was one painting that was scene of an abstract mountin chain and it was titled ‘Divided Bed’. I wrote this poem after staring at it for a long time and trying to figure out what a chain of mountains had to do with a bed. I was in a relationship that was ending around this time as well, so sort of combined those ideas here.
